Nov 5th @ Champlin Park

Saturday, 5 November 2011
Champlin Park High School [directions]

We are headed back to Anoka County for another tournament this weekend.  Should be about the same pool of people we debated last weekend.

Judges
We will need something like 13-14 judges for this weekend.  In order for everybody to debate this weekend (and next) we are really going to need some help with judges.  If anybody has a parent who would like to give judging a try, this would be a weekend where we need help.  If we are short judges we will have to do some code-sharing to make this all work.

Format
5 rounds + a final in both novice and varsity.

Times
Bus will depart Lakeville South at 6:45AM.
There is no return bus. Have your rides planned to pick you up at 4:00PM.  It’s about an hour from Lakeville to Champlin Park, so if you called for a ride when finals were about to begin, that would be pretty close to right.

Debating
We’ll have a real list of debaters after practice on Tuesday.  I’m planning that everybody is debating.

One thing that’s important:  If you are signed up to debate and confirm at practice that you are indeed competing, it’s essential that you show up on Saturday morning.

Lakeville North Results + Thanks

Thanks to the many parents and students who made the 2011 Lakeville North tournament a success.  It is the effort of our entire team community that makes  a big event like this run well.  Super job!

Highlights of results for Lakeville: [result packets]

Novice: Sawyer Rutan finished prelims 5-0 and made it to finals where he finished as runner-up. [details]

JV: Preeya Bhakta finished 5th in her first LD debate of the season, also picked up 2nd speaker with a boatload of points.  Nice!

Varsity: Sam Anderson and Josh You finished 9th and 10th respectively.

Novices at Lakeville North

Congrats to Bailee and the novice crew competing against 18 schools at the Lakeville North tournament.  Going into round 5 Lakeville held three of the top five spots in the tournament, in that round there was a key Lakeville vs. Lakeville debate that put the winner into the final championship debate.   Sawyer Rutan represented Lakeville in the finals where he did a good job but finished as the runner up.  Sawyer finished 2nd,  Claire Dodds 4th, David Bock 7th, Simon Oliver 8th, and Ted Jantscher 10th.  The whole team is proud of our novice debaters!

Saturday, October 8th

Hosting a tournament is a big deal.  It’s our responsibility to put on a tournament that is well run and classy.  I need these seven people to place to be at school at 5PM on Friday AND be at school on Saturday at 7AM:

  1. Leema
  2. Margaret
  3. Anselmo
  4. Jack
  5. Logan
  6. Dylan A
Then as far as debating goes, my plan is that everybody debates.
If we end up being short of judges, I might move a few experienced people over to judge novice (but it will not be any of the people from last week – they need to debate).   You will need to be at school no later than 7:45AM on Saturday morning.  Debaters will meet in the IMC at 7:45 where Bailee will take attendance.  Bailee is the coach in charge, so if you have questions, see her.

A note on decorum: We are hosts and everybody else at the tournament is our guest.  We must be good hosts first and foremost.  That means we’ll help people find rooms and do any tasks assigned by coaches without complaint or hesitation. :)  Come ready to debate just like you would any other day — no last minute printing, or case writing, etc.

Washburn Results for 2011

We had a good trip to Washburn HS for the Southside Classic.

In Varsity, Lakeville North debater Devon Wasche lead the team by being top speaker and finalist.  Lakeville South debater Logan Robers was also 4-0 but was lower seeded based on speaker points.  Margaret Gadek of Lakeville South as 3-1, with her only loss being to Devon.

In Novice, Simon Oliver of Lakeville North finished 4-0 and was 2nd place.

Here are links to results and ballots:

Coaches
I (Andy) will be taking a test on Oct 1st and will come over when I’m finished.  Danni Bayn will be the coach in charge on tournament day.  Be sure you get her phone number into your cell phone in case you need to reach somebody.  I will be out of communication on Saturday morning.

Times and Transportation
Depart Lakeville South at 7AM.  I will order to bus for 6:50 so the plan is that the bus is rolling at exactly 7AM.  Round 1 is at 8AM, so our departure time matters.

There is no return bus home. Awards are scheduled for 2:45PM so have your ride arranged for no later than 3PM.

Update: They have changed the schedule to be flighted, the impact of which is that the finals will be after awards.  Lakeville debaters can go home after awards, however.  Obviously if you are IN finals, you will need to stay to debate the final round. Please let your parents know this is a possibility.  It is something that is out of our control and the change was made early Friday morning.

Washburn High School is located at 201 W 49th St, Minneapolis, MN 55419.  Please enter the building off of 50th street and use Door 10.  All other doors will be locked on both Friday and Saturday, and security will be in attendance.  The easiest way to access Washburn is to take 35W to the 46th street exit and then take a left onto Nicollet.

Attire
Generally speaking you all looked great.  A reminder to be neat, which for boys includes having your shirts wrinkle-free, ties neat and sharp,  and hair under control.  Girls all looked classy.  Stay neat until you are headed home – then you can undo your ties, etc.

As we talked about at practice yesterday, we are having to make some changes for experienced debaters.  Plus we have many more novices ready to debate, so this is the update list:

MDTA Debate Jamboree
Chanhassen High School [directions and map]
Saturday, September 24th

Times and Schedule
Bus leaves from the upper/athletic doors of Lakeville South at 7AM.
The schedule is different than a regular tournament because of the various tutorials in places as part of the jamboree.   Round 1 begins at 9:15 and awards are scheduled for 4PM.

Transportation
These are the transportation rules for 2011:  The school will provide us a bus to take our team to the tournament.  However, there is NO return bus service.  That means to get home your parents need to pick you up at Chanhassen.  Awards are scheduled for 4PM so have you parents there about 4:15PM.

Food
I always advise our debaters to pack some food for snacking and eating.  It’s a long day. Concessions will be available, but you never know for sure what they are serving.  Bring money, bring food.
